SCHOOL WORKSHOPS
Emerald Music School is now offering exciting singing workshop days in schools. Large groups can be taken at once (up to 120 children at one time or more with further staff) and the children will learn how much fun it can be to sing in a big choir in harmony. The workshop days are designed for KS2, but can be adapted to include KS1 when required.
The workshops are great fun and encourage the children to participate fully and with confidence. The children will hardly realise how far they are being stretched and before they know it they will be singing in many parts and with much enthusiasm. The day concludes with a short performance to the parents or other students at the school. The teachers and parents are usually amazed at what can be achieved in such a short time and the adults are encouraged to join in too so it creates a community sing-a-long which creates a lasting impact.
More workshop leaders can be booked in order to have more groups running simultaneously. The only requirements are a big space to bring the groups and an audience together (some schools use the local church when their hall space is limited) and use of a piano or powerful keyboard.
Use of a photocopier may also be needed.
Throughout the day a variety of themes can be covered depending on the school’s requirements. Here are some suggestions:
- ‘Songs from around the world’ including rounds and part songs
- ‘African music’ including part songs, movement and percussion
- ‘Singing in harmony’ gradually building up the layers and including improvisation
EXAMPLE DAY: Based on a primary school with 30 children in each year with one workshop leader and class teachers present.

MUSIC WEEK 2013

Tue 27th Aug – Sat 31st Aug 10-4pm
Sat Concert 2pm
At Laleham Lea School, 29 Peak’s Hill, Purley CR8 3JJ
Emerald Music Week is a music activity course designed for young musicians of all standards aged 6-18.

The students are taught by excellent, lively and qualified staff. The courses are very successful because the emphasis is on learning through fun.
There are two concerts during the week, a solos concert where everyone has the chance to perform a solo and a presentation concert at the end of the course to provide an opportunity to perform new music learned throughout the week. Most students find that they make huge progress throughout the week and gain confidence in all aspects of music making. It is amazing how much music can be learnt and how many friendships are formed in an intensive week of music making.
The junior course is aimed at children aged six or above who enjoy singing and listening to music. They may be beginners on an instrument or may be looking to take up an instrument at a later date. The children have a busy week composing, listening to music, learning the recorder, singing songs, making instruments, creating artwork and playing games. They are joined by the older students to create a presentation at the end of the week.
The senior course is designed for instrumentalists and singers. They play and sing in ensembles and are given opportunities to work in small groups with tutors to create duets and trios. There are composition and improvisation workshops and everyone joins up for choir each day.
Each day there are games outside so that everyone has a break from music making for a short while.
NEW for 2013 Taster Course with Primo Music (ages 3-5)
Tue 27th Aug – Sat 31st Aug 10 – 11.30am, Sat Concert 2pm
Charlotte from Primo Music will be joining us to lead a taster course for children aged 3-5 and to provide a morning session for the under 11’s on Music Week. The children will explore song and body movement to provide strong foundationks for pulse, pitch, musical structure, harmony and melodic lines, but most important of all they will have lots of fun whilst developing musicianship. There will also be an opportunity to play unusual instruments from Finland and Indonesia. It is a great way to introduce children, both lively and introvert, to the love of music, rhythm and singing.

Winners, three years in a row!

Came home after a great concert to this last night. We have been given a commemorative plaque for the Beckenham Festival for winning 3 years in a row. It is very kind of the festival committee to give us something to keep as we have to give the beautiful shields back each year.
